After arriving at the hotel yesterday I decided to go for a walk down the beach, fell over a few times as per, but then found a lovely Italian restaurant on the beach. Decided that was where I was staying for the next few hours!
Had a lovely romantic meal for one, complete with cocktail and dessert. Saw a magnificent crab! He was huge. Then the sun started to set and it was unbelievably beautiful. And like a metaphor for the end of the trip. Deep.
Had breakfast this morning and got a little visitor.

Anyway the waiter said I could give him some food and boy did I. I felt like Snow White. A few came over. I was so excited. If you know me you’ll know I love squirrels. Despite him looking like a chipmunk’s twin, he is in fact a palm squirrel.
Oh I forgot to mention this guy!

I’ve never had a towel animal before! He’s so cute! I couldn’t use him.
Tried to have a look around Colombo but the place is nuts. Worst traffic I’ve ever seen. Did see a couple of nice things though.

And so that’s it. I’m heading to the airport for a long ass flight home.
I have to thanks Sri Lankan Dreams for putting all of this together and Nala for executing it really!

So what have I learned this trip?
- Much about the Sri Lankan way of life
- About Buddhism and Hinduism
- That Sri Lankan people do not accept the obese well.
- Sri Lankan’s call the shopping mall the city centre weirdly.
What were the highlights?
- Yala and seeing the leopard
- Polonnaruwa
- The whale watching boat trip
What were the lowlights?
- That damn weird massage and thinking I was being cooked alive
- The dying gecko
- The multiple accidents I had because I’m a clumsy cow.
What have I missed?
- Adam
- Road safety
- Western food
- The birth of my cousins child
- My grans hospital stay
My take home message is that Sri Lanka is a wonderful, unique place with a lot of culture, history and nature. The people are friendly generally and are pretty resilient. They have picked themselves up after the devastating Easter bombings and began to rebuild the tourism industry. I highly recommend a visit in the future.
That’s all from me folks. I’m so pleased you all joined me on this journey. Writing this and sharing my experiences with you means I don’t get as lonely and feel as though I have travel companions! So until the next adventure….
