Elephantastic

Was meant to write the first half of this last night but I was so tired that I just didn’t have the energy or the brain power.

So yesterday we went to Udawalawe National Park to see the elephants. As national parks go, it was probably the least interesting but we did see a tiny baby elephant which was gorgeous.

On the way to the park, we saw some tiny puppies. I mean tiny. The driver driver past them but we were nipping back to the hotel because Nala forgot his phone so I said on the way back for him to stop at the puppies. I’m not sure what I was expecting to do for them but anyway mum was with them when we got back and I fed her my left over lunch because then at least she can continue to make milk for them. It broke my heart that they were strays.

Then I finally got a picture of this…

Unfortunately I also learned it just means no noise, not specifically no trumpets. Gutted.

Came back to this last night….

Not quite sure what that says about my feet.

Went to the elephant transit house today where they look after little elephants who have been orphaned or sick and they feed them up and get them back into the wild when they are able to. It wasn’t like the one in Kenya where they did a bit of a talk we literally just sat and watched them eat but it was really good. The first elephant we saw wasn’t a baby but he broke my bloody heart.

Look at his little peg leg! The sign said the prosthesis had been donated by a zoo in Germany. I asked Nala how he lost his leg and he said he thinks he was born that way. So sad. However, apparently he does go back into the wild every day and just comes back to get fed and fixed up.

Then came the babies! First a couple, then a few, then a dozen and in the end there were more than I could count. Apparently they are just in the park but when the guy comes to the edge they know it’s feeding time. Some of them ran in so fast!

Some of the little ones were noisy little buggers. They should have read the sign!
WordPress is rubbish for videos so I’ll have to get them onto Facebook or similar as the signal here is terrible.

Last but not least I finally saw a giant squirrel!
