There’s no such thing as a free lunch

What is the price you pay?

Your health!

This week I have attended the Society for the Neurobiology of Language annual meeting in London. I am here for a total of five nights and I had the best intentions before I came. I was going to do a shop when I got here of healthy snacks and I was going to eat brilliantly. Wrong. Part of the problem is the room is so damn hot that I can’t keep anything here. However, the other problem is the constant barrage of free food and my lack of willpower combined. Here is what is on offer:

  • Full English in the morning at the hotel
  • Pastries in the morning at the conference
  • Cookies in the afternoon at the conference
  • Biscuits in the hotel
  • Canapés on the first evening of the conference
  • At least 3 glasses of wine per evening at the conference

These factors coupled with the fact it is hot and so I want ice cream and the nearest gym I can’t attend on my membership is too far to just nip to each morning, means one thing… I will be rolling home come Sunday covered in crumbs and my own shame.

🧳 UNPACKED

The Situation: Conference in London. Good intentions (healthy snacks, gym). Reality: hot room, free food barrage, zero willpower. Full English, pastries, cookies, biscuits, canapés, wine x3 nightly. Too hot = want ice cream. Gym too far. Rolling home Sunday covered in crumbs and shame.

Worth Knowing: From The Gym Era (2016). The free food struggle at conferences is eternal.
