Girls. Period.

So ladies, we all know that your appetite is increased just before lady menstruation comes to visit. But why is this and what can we do about it?

I don’t want to get overly scientific about this but the vast majority of evidence seems to suggest that it is to do with the fluctuation in hormones. The general consensus is that oestrogen suppresses appetite, which is highest around ovulation, and progesterone increases it, which is highest just before menstruation occurs. This may also explain the apparent weight gain from The Pill, as it is full of progesterone like hormones. I have drawn a nice little graph to illustrate the relationship between food intake and hormone levels below. Orange is oestrogen, blue is progesterone and purple is food.

Low serotonin levels just before your period starts may also be to blame for binge eating. I finally have an excuse!! You may also have a particular preference toward carbohydrates or fatty foods around this time.

Not only does it make you eat more but you also feel pretty rubbish too. Moods tend to be lower before your period, which may be related to the drop in serotonin. I don’t know about you but I comfort eat a lot. You’re also more likely to get bloating and water retention, and aches and pains which make working out that bit less attractive, which is a shame because it can help with some of the symptoms. You can also be lacking in energy, oversleeping and anxious. Oh, those pesky hormones!

So what can you do?

Firstly, give yourself a break. 50% of the population go through this regularly. It is not abnormal and neither are you!

Try to be mindful about what you are eating. Give yourself treats but don’t go eating everything in sight. Calorie counting can help you to keep on top of this. Try to choose the healthy or less calorific option if you are going to have a binge.

Try to get some exercise. Even if it is just a small amount, it will help. Prepare to do a small workout. Once you start you might find you want to do more. Take up boxing. Use the extra agitation you have to punch a man.

Finally, remind yourself that, as a woman, at least you don’t have to go through childbirth. Oh wait……

Why You’re Hungrier Before Your Period: Oestrogen suppresses appetite (peaks at ovulation), progesterone increases it (peaks pre-period). Low serotonin doesn’t help either. The graph shows it all.

Managing It:

  • Track your cycle so you’re not blindsided
  • Prep healthier binge options in advance
  • Force yourself to start a short workout (you’ll likely keep going)
  • Boxing is excellent for period rage
  • Calorie tracking helps, but don’t beat yourself up

Worth Knowing: It’s hormones, not weakness. Plan for it.
