Snack Attack

So those of you who follow my Instagram or Facebook may have seen I had an incident with Nutella last night. Eating it straight from the jar. Oh the horror. Snacking is my Achilles heel. On the whole (aside from the odd pizza) my meals are pretty healthy but I just adore chocolate and anything that includes chocolate and hazelnut is a winner in my eyes.

Oh, the shame.

Don’t waste any.

I appear to have made a mess.

I also fell into another trap recently. Finding slightly healthier snacks, such as those in the Graze range, which now deliver in multipacks and you can choose which ones, and the Nakd range and just eating a whole bunch of them.

Graze cocoa and vanilla protein flapjack.

So what are the solutions? Well I swear by this but have occasional days where I don’t do it: Don’t get hungry. I honestly find I eat more crap if I’m hungry. So therefore eat regular meals and schedule in snacks. Schedule a graze box every now and then. It’s fine but try to eat healthy snacks in between. Some ideas:

  • Carrot sticks- my current favourite. Easy and cheap
  • Greek yoghurt with chopped nuts or fruit
  • Fruit
  • Rice cakes and avocado or nut butter
  • Protein pancakes (egg and protein powder whisked)
  • Smoothie
  • Frozen fruit and protein powder mixed to make a sort of angel delight type consistency
What I should be eating!

My creation: Frozen strawberries and bananas with strawberry protein powder and a dash of almond milk.

Finally, avoid protein based snacks. These are usually aimed at people trying to build muscle not losing weight. Just because it has high protein does not mean it’s low in calories, fat or sugar.

🧳 UNPACKED

The Nutella Incident: This was The Gym Era reality – eating Nutella straight from the jar. The shame. The mess. The lack of regret. Snacking was my Achilles heel. Meals were pretty healthy (aside from the odd pizza), but chocolate? Especially chocolate and hazelnut? I had no defence.

The “Healthy Snack” Trap: Found Graze boxes (now available in multipacks where you choose the ones you want) and Nakd bars – both healthier options – then proceeded to eat a whole bunch of them. Healthier doesn’t mean unlimited, turns out.

The Real Solution: Don’t get hungry. I swear by this but have occasional days where I ignore my own advice entirely (see: Nutella jar incident). When I’m hungry, I eat more crap. Schedule regular meals and planned snacks.

Actually Healthy Snacks:

  • Carrot sticks (my current favourite – easy and cheap)
  • Greek yoghurt with chopped nuts or fruit
  • Fruit
  • Rice cakes with avocado or nut butter
  • Protein pancakes (egg and protein powder whisked together)
  • Smoothies
  • Frozen fruit blended with protein powder – makes a sort of angel delight consistency

My creation: Frozen strawberries and bananas with strawberry protein powder and a dash of almond milk. Actually delicious.

The Protein Snack Warning: Avoid protein-based snacks if you’re trying to lose weight. They’re aimed at people building muscle, not losing weight. High protein doesn’t automatically mean low calories, fat, or sugar.

Better Snacking Kit:

Worth Knowing: “Healthy” snacks still have calories. Graze boxes are better than Nutella from the jar, but eating five in one sitting defeats the purpose. The frozen fruit + protein powder trick genuinely works for sweet cravings without the sugar crash. And sometimes you’re just going to eat Nutella from the jar, and that’s fine – just don’t do it every night.
